Starting this Sunday — October 30 — the adult Bible class on Sunday mornings at St. Mark will begin a study of some of the different Bible translations that are available for use in public worship.
The study will use one or two of the appointed Scripture lessons for the week and compare them across three or four translations at a time. This week, Matthew 10:16-23 and Galatians 5:1-6, using the NIV84, NIV2011, English Standard Version (ESV), and New King James Version (NKJV).
Studies in this vein — using appointed lessons, or books of the Bible — will be ongoing over the next six or seven months as our Synod and local congregations moves toward voting on a preferred translation (for publications) of the Bible to replace the outgoing NIV84 (which will no longer be published).
NOTE: Whatever translation the Synod chooses will not become the “official” WELS translation. No congregation will be told to use this or that translation. Each congregation can move forward with the translation they choose. In fact, because Zondervan/Biblica has recently informed us of a “fair-use permission” for the NIV1984, many things might be able to move forward using that translation even past the current 2013 deadline for usage.
